Natalie and I are thrilled to bring you the first-ever San Francisco Pain au Chocolat Competition! As huge fans of this iconic pastry, we decided to turn our love of flaky layers and rich chocolate into a friendly yet fierce battle of the best. We’ll be tasting and scoring chocolate croissants from some of San Francisco’s top bakeries to determine who makes the ultimate pain au chocolat.
Arsicault. Frequently cited as having the best croissants in the Bay Area, Arsicault's chocolate croissants are described as light, flaky, and buttery, making them a must-try for pastry lovers. The bakery often has long lines, but the quality makes it worth the wait.
B Patisserie. Known for its exceptional pastries, B Patisserie offers a delightful chocolate croissant that is both rich and flaky. This bakery is also famous for its kouign amann and other French treats, making it a popular stop for dessert enthusiasts
Tartine Bakery. Renowned for its artisanal approach to baking. Their chocolate croissants are rich and filled with high-quality chocolate, making them a favorite among locals.
Juniper. They have gained recognition for its delicious croissants, including chocolate variations that have received rave reviews for their texture and flavor. This bakery has quickly become a local favorite
Jane The Bakery: Their chocolate croissant is a standout treat, celebrated for its flaky, buttery layers that are a hallmark of traditional laminated dough. Each croissant is generously filled with rich, melty chocolate, providing a delightful contrast to the pastry's crisp exterior.
